The map is an item that allows the player to show the area around them. When crafted The map will center on wherever crafted and be completely blank. Fill it up by exploring the area. The player is marked by an arrow.

Maps are usable in Multiplayer but if you make one it will be the same as any other maps on the server, so multiple people can easily help fill in a map as a team.
